The US state of West Virginia is best known for its coal mining, say Lebold and Wilkinson, but its geology encompasses more than its vast coal fields, and has a long history extending back hundreds of millions of years before the materials that would be transformed into coal and natural gas began to accumulate. They point out major geological features along the major highways through the state in sections on the Appalachian Plateaus Province, the Valley and Ridge Province, and the Blue Ridge Province and the Great Valley.
