The Movement Resonated Deep in My Soul : New Perspectives on the Global Anti-Apartheid Liberation Movement

This book delves into the past and present of South African liberation movements, exploring how they intertwine movement theory and practice rooted in diaspora experiences, cultural production, anti-apartheid activism, and transnational solidarity. Authored by individuals deeply connected to the liberation struggle, many contributors have been mentored by anti-apartheid activists and exiles, while others were pivotal figures in the global anti-apartheid movement themselves. This volume uncovers untold histories of exile, shedding light on how exiles and diaspora communities developed innovative approaches to liberation struggles. These approaches relied on embodied forms of communication that inspired subsequent generations of activists. From community radio, underground media, and broadcast communications to the creation of music productions, record labels, memoirs, sermons, intimate family storytelling, and survival programs, these efforts forged new pathways for resistance and solidarity. The authors reflect on their political awakenings and consciousness-raising journeys, sharing deeply personal narratives of being drawn to this work. Grounded in the Black feminist principle that “the personal is political,” this collection is anti-colonial not only in its subject matter but also in its methodology—examining complex topics through introspective and personal lenses. An invaluable resource for scholars, students, and researchers, this book is ideal for those interested in African studies, South African politics and development, ethnic studies, and critical race studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Thematics.
