Solis

From the authors of national bestseller Sanctuary comes a haunting near-future companion novel about undocumented immigrants subjected to deadly experiments in a government labor camp and the four courageous rebels who set into place a daring plan to liberate them. “Solis is an urgently needed antidote to the fear, fascism, and destruction that defines so much of the present world. . . . a rich, beautiful, and evocative queer love [story].”—Chase Strangio, ACLU Lawyer and Transgender Rights Activist “Resistance and a fight for freedom in the face of unspeakable horrors . . . A gripping concept.”—Kirkus Reviews In 2033, the world is desperate for water. Determined to win the global water race, the New American Republic devises a plan to use the recently discovered aqualinium to make rain, ending the devastating droughts that were brought on by the worst of climate change. All they need are people to dig for it. People like seventeen-year-old Rania and the thousands of other undocumented immigrants who have been rounded up by the Deportation Force and bused to a labor camp in the desert. Here, enduring brutal circumstances—little food and under the constant threat of death—they mine for the mineral that could potentially save the world and restore the xenophobic government to its status as a superpower. But solidifying this power will come at a cost for the prisoners, whose bodies are slowly being destroyed as they breathe in the sulfuric fumes of the mines. Those too sick to dig are subjected to cruel experiments as scientists try to perfect the formula to create rain. When Rania has lost all she can stand to lose, she and other prisoners revolt, joining the resistance group SOLIS, which is working from outside the camp to free them. But in order for SOLIS’s plan to work, sacrifice will be required. Not only from Rania, but from Jess, a former DF officer, now also a prisoner; and from Vali, a SOLIS soldier who’s on a mission to liberate both the camp and her mother,
