Freedom Writing : African American Civil Rights Literacy Activism, 1955-1967 (Studies in Writing and Rhetoric)

This study draws on ideas from cultural theory, literacy, and rhetorical studies to describe the intellectual and pedagogical traditions of African Americans and to argue for increased respect for African American literary traditions such as call and response and testimony. The author presents the theoretical framework of Gospel Literacy to examine the literacy activities and citizenship education activities of the Civil Rights movement, relying on oral histories, interviews, and archival data.
