In this first collection of essays in English on Upbuilding Courses in Various Spirits contributors approach Kierkegaard's authorship as a whole, including the futility of life in the either/or mode. The 15 essays include such topics as postmodern readings and the requirement of oneness, the paradoxical pause of confession, distraction and self-deception, vocation, transformation by the gospel, on the contentment and glory of being human, faith's freedom from care, imitating the inimitable. Suffering, forsaking God, Lutheran Christology, guilt and innocent suffering, intense communication in the discourses, and the maieutic relations between Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits and Works of Love.
