Product Description

For participating in the Dakota-US War of 1862, 265 Dakota men were marched in shackles to Camp McClennan, a military prison at Davenport, Iowa. There they wrote letters in the Dakota language, which are now at the Minnesota Historical Society. Here 50 of those letters, written between April 1863 and 1866, are presented by Canku (Dakota studies, North Dakota State U.) and Simon (Dakota language, Moorhead Public Schools, Minnesota) in Dakota, in literal translation and in full translation.
